Forgot Your Windows Password: What Are Your Options on a Device You Own?

Which method applies depends on the account type. A Microsoft account is reset online from any other device, with no tool required. A local account needs a password reset disk or official installation media. And before anything else: if the drive is encrypted with BitLocker, confirm you have the recovery key first, because some methods can otherwise make your data permanently unreadable.

First: check for BitLocker

This step is not optional. If the system drive is encrypted with BitLocker — which is the default on a lot of factory Windows 11 machines — then modifying system files from the recovery environment can change things enough that Windows demands the recovery key.

Before you go further, confirm you can actually reach that key. It is usually saved in the Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey, printed with the machine, or held by the IT department if it is a work device.

Do not continue if you cannot find the recovery key. In that case the safe option is reinstalling, knowing your personal files will be erased, or consulting a specialist before you decide anything.

Microsoft account vs local account

The distinction determines everything after it:

If you are unsure: if you sign in with an email address, it is a Microsoft account. If it is a short name with no email, it is almost certainly a local one.

Find your situation in three steps

We ask for no files and upload nothing. Answer three questions to get the right path.

The available paths and their steps

For a Microsoft account — from any other device, open Microsoft's account recovery page and reset the password. Then sign in on the locked machine with the new one. No tool or USB stick needed.

For a local account with a reset disk — insert the drive, and on the sign-in screen choose Reset password and follow the wizard. This path is safe and does not touch your files.

For a local account without a reset disk — you will need official Windows installation media and a set of manual steps from the recovery command prompt. The path works, but it demands care: one wrong step can leave the system in a worse state than it started.

What we do not do

We document only the paths that work on a device the user owns, and we state the risks attached to each one. We do not provide tools for getting past the lock on a device the user does not own.

In practice, most demand for this kind of repair comes from repair shops and second-hand dealers: a machine that was resold, reset, or handed in for service without the credentials. That is a perfectly legitimate context, but it requires proof of ownership or documented authorization from the owner.

If you run a shop and need these steps repeatedly, the better answer is a package that runs offline against the locked machine — that is what our offline kit provides.

Common questions

Can I unlock a device that is not mine?

No. These guides are for devices you own or are documented to service. Getting past the lock on someone else's device is unlawful in most jurisdictions, and we will not assist with it.

I forgot the password and the drive is BitLocker-encrypted, with no key

Stop here. Any modification from the recovery environment can cause permanent data loss. Look for the recovery key in the Microsoft account linked to the device, or consult a specialist before doing anything.

My account is a Microsoft account, but the device is offline

No problem: the reset happens on another device. After you change the password, Windows will use the new one at the next connection, or you can enter it directly if the device is online.

Will I lose my files when resetting the password?

Resetting the password itself does not touch your files. The risk comes from manual repair steps or from reinstalling, which is why the right order is confirming you have a copy of your data first.
