Recover deleted photos from a phone without a computer
Most deleted phone photos are not gone - they are sitting in a 'recently deleted' folder with a countdown on them. Google Photos keeps them 60 days, iPhone 30 days, Samsung Gallery 30 days.
After that window closes, or if the photo was deleted from the trash as well, recovery depends on how much the phone has written since. Phones write constantly in the background, so the window is shorter than on a computer.
Stop doing these right now
- Turn off automatic app updates and cloud sync temporarily, and stop taking photos and videos. Every new photo occupies space your old ones are waiting in.
- Do not install 'recovery' apps from the store onto the phone itself - they write to exactly the storage you are trying to recover from, and most are worthless.
- Do not factory reset the phone. It is the most common and most final mistake.
What to do, step by step
iPhone
- Photos app > Albums > Recently Deleted. Select and recover - this works for up to 30 days.
- Check iCloud.com on a browser: tap Account settings > Recover files under Advanced. Deleted iCloud data can live there separately for 30 days.
- If you synced with a computer, check that Photos library or iTunes backup before trying anything else.
Android
- Google Photos > Library > Trash - 60 days. Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei gallery apps each keep their own separate trash, usually 30 days, so check the gallery app too.
- Check the file manager app for its own recycle bin; many vendors keep one, separate from Google Photos.
- Without a trash copy, disk-level recovery from internal storage requires root on most modern Android versions, which itself writes to the device - realistically, this is where an SD card or a cloud backup is the only remaining source.
If the photos were on an SD card
- Take the card out and put it in a reader on a computer. Card recovery is far easier and safer than phone recovery.
- Do not let the phone mount and re-index the card on the way.
What decides whether it works
- How long since deletion, and whether the phone has been in normal use since then.
- Whether a cloud backup existed before the deletion - Google Photos, iCloud, or the vendor's own cloud.
- Storage type: modern phones use flash storage with TRIM-like behaviour, which erases deleted blocks in the background.

Do phone recovery apps actually work?
Almost never on internal storage. Modern Android and iOS both block apps from raw disk access, so apps cannot see deleted blocks. Marketing screenshots are not evidence.
Can I get photos back after a factory reset?
On a modern phone with encryption enabled, effectively no. The encryption keys are destroyed during the reset, which is the intended behaviour.
